I think that the Shukumar is the protagonist of the story. He seems like he is the one all the bad stuff is happening too and personally when I read the story I was it from his eyes. He is in the dark about how Shoba feels and us as the reader are also in the dark. While they have both committed sins, he is still the protagonist. Its like how Deadpool is the protagonist of the movie Deadpool even though he is not inherently good. Shukumar is sort of playing a confused husband character. Maybe I’m being biased because I believe that Shoba is in the wrong but I definitely do not think that she is the protagonist. I think the author interned for the reader to be able to choose a side in the story so he made both characters both good and evil. I guess I’ll see who other people think the protagonist is to test if that is true. I’m assuming a lot of the girls in the class will be more sympathetic to Shoba’s side. There is only 1 other guy in the class and he’s not here today but I think most guys would be more sympathetic to Shukumar.
Run, Mourner, Run
The central conflict in Run, Mourner, Run is person vs. self. It is the main character Dean fighting against is own inner feelings. He is also in a person vs. person conflict with Percy who is the main antagonist of the story. Dean struggles with the complications of his sexuality as Percy uses him for his own gain. The main conflict climaxes when Percy catches Ray and Dean in bed together and uses it to blackmail Ray into giving up his land. I don’t know what to write. I don’t know what to write. I don’t know what to write. I don’t know what to write. I don’t know what to write. Dean is the protagonist and Percy is the antagonist of the story and the two characters in the person vs. person conflict. I don’t know what to write. I don’t know what to write. I don’t know what to write. The way that Dean fights against himself is very intense as he struggles with hiding ad accepting his own sexuality. He is forced to come to terms with it when Percy confronts him at the beginning of the story.
Lullaby
The most important symbol in the text is the hawk that circles in the sky. It can represent the white people of the story. They hawk circles in the sky waiting for an opportunity to catch prey just as the white people wait for an opportunity to take advantage of the native americans. The rancher waited until he could no longer use Ayah’s husband anymore and fired him like he was nothing. The doctors waited until Ayah could unknowingly sign papers to have her children taken away. The army waited for Jimmie to become of age so they could draft him into the military. This story revolves around a predator prey situation where Ayah is the prey. Throughout the story she is confused and scared because she does not understand what is happening or why. All she knows is that the white people are out to get her and she does not know how to stop it. Just as a scared rabbit running from a hawk, all Ayah can do is run and hide, there is nobody to protect her. Every situation throughout the story has this sort of predator patiently waiting for its prey parallel. Just as they hawk disappears over the mountains, the white people disappear, untouchable from justice. They committed discrimination and took advantage of Ayah and her people and as the sheriff said, there is nothing to be done, its all technically legal.
